Being Black

Oh we’ve come so far,

(sarcastically)

“we can drink from

water fountains and drive cars.”

(laughs)

We can go to an everybody school now,

rejoice at church and sing hallelujah loud.

They're all like

“hey now the past is in the past

get over it,

slap a smile on that face

‘cuz that time has passed.”

Easy for you to say

you had it easy and fair,

momma don’ told me

“life ain't no crystal stair.”

They say we vultures

feed on the used and dead-

In reality they stole our culture

from the promised land.

Were like sheep to them

they shear off our creations

make it into thread-

Use the thread to cover up the lies, minimize

us to scraps from their hands.

I'm dead!

How do you feel now

that you’ve killed us?

Steal our ideas

Then have the audacity to fear us-

“Hypocrites,”

You're just mad

‘cuz you couldn't think of it.

Being Black

Progress is key,

so therefore we need more.

But we can’t put a key in something

if there's no lock on the door.

They don't want us to be great-

They need things they can relate to.

So that's why we exaggerate our mannerisms

and forward stereotypes-

“They’re unfaithful.”

We were and always will be great,

greatness no man on earth could take.

So when I say being black

is it me that's a lie or them who is fake?

Being Black

The author's comments:

I had just watched Respect and Genius about Aretha Franklin, and in the movie it showed a lot of the 60s and segregation time where “blacks” couldn't do much. I also always debate with people about slavery and segregation times, even with fellow african americans or mixed people if we should just get over slavery and the treatment toward us. I feel as though society wants us to just get over it they’re like “hey you can do all this stuff now, you're equal to us” but then things like police brutality and just outright racist things happen. Also for the newer generation like myself, we cant ever talk about the slavery, or segration times without someone saying “how are you affected by this"? "No one caused you any pain because you didn't live in that time.” I feel like you say we are equal and all those things are behind us but then we still have to fear walking by ourselves, getting pulled over, even getting on the bus because the people who want us to get over it still have the dominant superior mentality. When we try to partake in things, it just gets outright stolen from white people and then for them to claim it as theirs is a slap in the face to take all of our talent, creation and hardwork and throw it down the drain for us, then just use it for money. This poem is my best piece because I feel like it speaks volumes, especially coming from a younger person, talking about a tricky and hard topic like this. I think it's powerful and heavy because “being black” is part of my identity even though im mixed and society still needs some help with topics like that.
