A Prayer for my Sweetheart, the Drunk
Pain seeps from every pore
Disconnected thoughts fall to the floor
The room feels like it will soon implode
Your fragile brain begins to erode
Colors mix and sound flies away
The alcohol pushes back the day
You resist the pull but it swallows you up
All of your worries fall into the cup
It lessens the sting but the hurt is still there
And so for you I pray this prayer
That the bottle of poison would leave your lips
That the light of your life would cease to eclipse
Only I seem to see how quickly you fade
Around the edges how much you have frayed
Your eyes tell a tale I don’t wish to hear
It falls from your eyes with every last tear
And now the drink, it pulls you down
It’s too late to save you, so I watch you drown
I take the bottle from your palm
And vow to always sing this psalm
