Fire alarms go off,
It's the middle of the night.
You hear the screatching
Beep, Beep, Beep.
As the smoke detector by your door goes off.
You are plastered to your bed,
Staring at the celing,
But you can't get your eyes to look at the smoke detector.
You are too scared,
Too still.
Then,
The alarms stop.
It's 1:15 a.m.
The come back again,
A peircing beep, beep, beep in your ears.
Then everything is still,
But only for a second.
The alarms go off again,
And you race to your door.
You run downstaris as fast as you can,
You want to know what is going on.
As your feet hit the 5th step,
Everything is silent.
You find you mom in the kitchen,
"I think I saw smoke," she says.
"Mom, I don't see any smoke."
A relieved sigh came from my mom,
"Good, I must have just imagined it since I was nervous."
Your heart beats fast still,
Faster than it has ever beaten.
You sit on the couch with your mom,
Just trying to catch your breath.
Everything is quiet now...
Your brother is stil asleep,
And your dad is coming up the basement stairs.
You collect some oxygen,
And you go back to your room.
While you were on the middle floor,
You and your mom noticed something.
The light was blinking on 1 smoke detector.
"That must be the main one," you say,
I walked around and that is the only one blinking.
"It must just be the batteries," your mom says.
"Yeah, I am going back to bed," you say.
You walk back up the stairs,
And into your bedroom.
You turn off the light,
Lay back in bed,
Cover up,
And slowly fall back asleep.
Your heart still beats fast.
You sleep a while,
About 1 hour and 45 minutes,
Then you hear it agian.
Now it's 2:00 a.m.
You wake up,
More relaxed this time.
Beep, Beep, Beep,
It's still a piercing sound.
This time you walk to your door,
Slowly,
Quietly,
Tip-toing.
You make it down the main stairs,
And into the basement.
You walk to your parents bedroom,
Where the door is open.
You peek in,
Mom and dad are still asleep.
You go back upstairs,
Calm and collected,
Because you know it's just the batteries.
You tip-toe into your brother's room,
He is saying something is his sleep,
But he is ok.
You walk back into your room,
You turn on the lamp on your night stand.
"I am not going back to sleep yet," you tell yourself.
"It's going to go off again soon, so why go back to sleep?"
You pull out your notebook,
And you write how you feel.
You also write a poem,
This one,
About everything that happened.
This makes time go fast.
You decide to go back to sleep,
The alarms don't go off again...

The author's comments:
This did really happen. I wrote this about a night when our fire alarms went off, but it turned out that the batteries were going dead.
