Spider Scare
A grassy field.
HENRY is cowering in a dirt pit, while BECKETT is hovering over him.
HENRY
Just leave me behind.
BECKETT
I will never! A true hero never abandons his sidekick.
HENRY
I am not your sidekick.
BECKETT
Then you would be the one out here, but instead, you’re hiding like a baby.
HENRY
I’m not a baby either.
BECKETT
It’s just a little spider. Don’t be scared.
HENRY
That spider was definitely not little.
BECKETT
It’s smaller than my pinky finger.
HENRY
It was looking at me with evil eyes. It wanted to get me!
BECKETT
You can’t even see its eyes.
HENRY
Whatever. Can you just go get Mom?
BECKETT
Nope. Only you can save yourself here.
HENRY
Please?
BECKETT
No. There’s going to be spiders whenever we go outside. You have to face it.
Becket tries to pick up the spider.
HENRY
What are you doing?
BECKETT
I’m showing you that it’s a friend.
HENRY
Beckett. No. Stop. Put it down now.
BECKETT
Look! Isn’t it so cute?
HENRY
No. Stop it.
BECKETT
No! You can’t be scared of this forever.
HENRY
Yes I can!
BECKETT
Oh, you can see its eyes! Aww.
HENRY
Stop! Get it away and I can come out.
BECKETT
No, I have a better idea.
HENRY
What? No, what are you doing?
Beckett puts the spider down in the dirt pit.
HENRY (Cont’d)
Ahh! Beckett! Help!
Henry runs around in the pit but cannot get out.
BECKETT
I’ll only help you if you bring the spider back up to me.
HENRY
I lost it!
BECKETT
No, I can see it. It’s right there.
HENRY
Please don’t make me do this.
BECKETT
Do you want to be stuck in there instead? I bet there are so many more spiders in there.
HENRY
Stop. I’ll do it, just get me out.
Henry nervously picks up the spider and gives it to Beckett.
BECKETT
Wasn’t that easy?
HENRY
Get me out of here now.
BECKETT
Okay, okay.
Beckett helps Henry up and out of the dirt pit, and they go off to continue playing.
END OF PLAY.
