The Princess and the Baker Boy
Once upon a time, there was a far away land with a beautiful princess. Her kingdom was small but mighty, rich but not stuck up. There was beautiful scenery all around, life was just great for everyone. She lived the lavious life, she got to do many things that other children would only dream of. She was generally happy, until one day when her father introduced her to her supposedly new fiance.
“Hello there my name is Philip, Prince of Galivia.”
“Hi I’m Anastasia but you can call me Ana”
Her father left them to talk, it was kind of awkward at first, they didn’t know what to talk about, then they started to talk about just plain old regular stuff. Although they couldn’t agree on anything and she was actually starting to hate him and everything he stood for. When he was called away on important business, Ana took her chance to go tell her parents she couldn’t marry him. Her parents looked at her with hope in their eyes as she came up to talk to them, she knew that there was something wrong. When she broke the news to them, her father started pleading with her;
“Please Ana, we need the alliance with Galivia. They help us in ways you can't even begin to understood yet”
“Okay, I’ll try”
She left her parents and went to her room to read, once she settled into her book, she saw her mother was waiting in the doorway.
“Honey can I talk to you?”
“Of course, what about?”
“ Prince Philip”
“Okay, Mom you must know that I really don’t like him. He is arrogant and selfish, he wouldn't stop talking about himself earlier I never got a word in.”
“I understand, and I trust your judgement. If you really can’t marry him that’s fine.”
“What am I supposed to do about Dad”
“Honey we just want you to follow you heart, you never do anything for yourself. You always try to please us and we love you for it but this is your decision.”
“Okay I love you mom”
Her mom left her to finish reading her book; Ana decided to give Philip another chance. That night they met up for dinner in the garden; she could tell he was giving his best effort to be sweet. Once they sat down though; he started to get upset with her for the silliest reasons. She wasn’t as proper as the other princesses and didn't care about which fork she was supposed to use or when to use it, Phillip got mad because she started using the wrong fork. He got really mad, it started to scare her. They sat silent the rest of the night, when they were finished he offered to escort her to her room. She told him she was okay but he did it anyway. Once they got to her room, he started yelling at her for not knowing the proper etiquette,
“How the heck are you a princess; you don’t even know which fork to use. Why are you so stupid hun? No wonder your parents had to set us up, no one would want you anyway.”
“You have no right to talk to me like that, I don’t care about which fork to use. I’m only doing this for them, I’m trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, but if you gonna be a jerk you can go ahead and leave.” she said slamming the door in his face.
She started thinking about what to do, she didn't want to marry the prince. But at the same time she didn't want to disappoint her parents. She wanted to get out and think. She decided to take a walk through the village. The village was quaint, peaceful and just the perfect place to walk around and think. By the time she had reached the village it was about time for nightfall, she stopped in the bakery to get some leftover bread cause she was still kind of hungry. Once she got in the bakery, she was flooded with warmth and the smell of fresh baked bread. A young boy came out to great her,
“Hey what can I get for you?” he said
“ Oh, um do you have any bread rolls left” she said
“Oh yeah actually we do” he said.
“Ok I’ll have 2 thanks” she stated
“Ok; do I know you from somewhere?” he asked
“Well I don’t think so, my names Penelope”, she said, changing her name because she didn't want to be known
“Oh okay well I’m Andrew, this is me and my grandma’s bakery”
“I don’t get out much so I finally decided to come and check out the town square”
Once they started talking they couldn't stop, they talked about their lives and what they like and what they don’t like for hours. They noticed the time around 11 and he offered to make her cot to sleep on at his house, she decided to take him up on it. She knew that she could possibly get in trouble but she didn't care anymore, she wanted to find the person she was gonna marry on her own. They talked and talked and talked, until both of them fell asleep. In the morning she woke up and there was no one there, she started to get worried. She got up and looked around for a glass of water, she found a note on the table from Andrew telling her where he was. She freshened up and went down to the bakery to meet up with him. Once she got their she could tell it was busy, she decided to start helping. The princess had enjoyed to bake when she was at the castle, so she knew what she was doing. She started to take people's requests and then writing them down and packing them up so that Andrew could check them out at the counter. After about an hour it had finally slowed down,
“How did you know how to do all of that?” he said
“Oh well I really like to bake so I know all of the types of bread and pastries their are. I hope you don’t mind.”
“Not at all, it’s nice having someone help me”
She spent the rest of the day at the bakery and then she stayed the night again. He never questioned where she came from and why she was there. He just accepted her being there and enjoyed her company. They did this together for about a week. Until he asked her;
“Why are you here? I mean I love spending time with you and I really appreciate your help but where did you come from? Is no one wondering where you are?”
She was gonna tell him when she heard a voice from outside the bakery yelling her name. It sounded like Phillip. Sure enough when she came outside there he was on his dark brown horse; he stopped in his tracks and came up to her and started yelling for leaving and not telling anyone.
“How dare you leave without my permission. You didn’t leave a note or anything. Your parents have moved up the wedding, it’s tomorrow. I’ve spent the last 3 days looking for you just to find you with some baker boy.”
She started to cry silently. Andrew didnt know what to do, he tried to tell him to leave her alone but the words just didn't come. She didn’t put up a fight, she knew her little vacation was over. She whispered she was sorry to Andrew and hoped on the back of his horse. And just like that she was gone.
He spent the rest of the day sulking, at the end of the night his grandmother walks in.
“Where's this girl I’ve been hearing about all around town.”
“She left”
“Why?”
“Apparently she is getting married and she is the princess”
“Well do you love this girl”
“No but she was a really good friend”
“Do you really think everything she said was a lie”
“ I mean no, everything except her name seemed true.”
“Son let me tell you something; friends are always there for you. They will pick you up when you are down and help you when you are struggling. If you want to continue to be her friend you have to make the effort just as much as she does”
“Okay, what should I do she gets married in like 12 hours”
“Go to the castle and talk to her”
He decided that his grandmother was right, he started heading out of the house, when he saw her. She had come back.
“My name is actually Anastasia. I told Phillip I couldn’t marry him because he is not a good person and I know that I wouldn't be happy. I finally stood up for myself and did something I wanted too, you gave me the strength to do it. You helped me learn to stand on my own to feet. Everything else I told you is true. I know that you probably can’t trust me now and that’s okay but I thought I would just tell you.”
After she finished, he stood there dumbfounded. He decided to take a chance and go and live with her in the castle. She offered them the position to be their personal baker.
