The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
The Fault in Our Stars is a romance fiction novel and is the most heartfelt and inspiring novel I’ve ever read. The author, John Green, takes you on an emotional rollercoaster involving joy, sadness, fear, and anger. The Fault in Our Stars takes place in Indianapolis, Indiana and is narrated by Hazel Grace Lancaster, a sixteen year old girl with thyroid cancer that spread to her lungs. In order for her to breathe normally, she must lug around a portable oxygen tank. She has a negative outlook on life so her mother forces her to attend a support group where she meets Augustus Waters, a seventeen year old cancer survivor that had one of his legs amputated. He was there to support his friend, Isaac, who has eye cancer. Augustus has a positive outlook on life, has a good sense of humor and is always trying to bring out the best in people. Hazel is obsessed with a novel entitled “An Imperial Affliction” because the main character, Anna, has a rare cancer which is similar to her own life. The book ends with a cliffhanger leaving Hazel with many unanswered questions. Hazel has come up with many possible endings for the story and has sent a lot of letters to the author since there was no sequel. She knows that the author, Peter Van Houten has retired and is currently living in Amsterdam. Hazel had Augustus read the novel and when he finished he had more questions of his own. Eventually, they were able to track down Van Houten’s assistant, Lidewij and Augustus uses his wish from the Genies organization to take Hazel to Amsterdam to visit Van Houten. Although they didn’t get the answers they were looking for, the trip brought them much closer. Augustus and Hazel spend a lot of time together and they both developed feelings for each other. Hazel compares herself to a grenade because she knows that if she does fall in love, she will hurt Augustus when she dies because of her cancer. A few weeks after they return from Amsterdam, tragedy strikes changing many people’s lives especially Hazel’s. I highly recommend this book to everyone. Nobody would want to miss how this wonderful story comes to an end.
