What happens when 24 people are thrown together to kill or be killed for entertainment? The Hunger Games, obviously. The novel, written by Suzanne Collins, follows a dystopian society from the viewpoint of 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen. As the selection of the 74th Hunger Games approach, Katniss's sister, Primrose, has been chosen to participate. Upon hearing this, Katniss panics and volunteers to replace her to save her from the torture. Accompanying her is Peeta Mellark, who holds a small but strong memory in Katniss. As the story progresses, Katniss realizes one major thing: the Hunger Games have really begun.
I personally find this book a bit difficult to describe, almost ineffable. Simply using words like intriguing and interesting fail to actually capture how good the book is. The Hunger Games is face paced, eventful, and vivid in description. This combination allows for images to force themselves in reader’s heads, constantly flashing to keep up with the speed of the story. The way Collins wrote the story makes it all the more brilliant. With an action-packed, suspenseful story, the powerful writing style really lived up to the plotline.
Followed by Catching Fire and Mockingjay, it makes for a good series overall. However, the first book, in my opinion, is the best book of all, which started the whole hype and is undoubtedly worth reading. The film adaptation will soon be released on March 23rd, 2012.
