Once upon a time
There was a kingdom so sublime
When the little princess was born
The castle adorned, no longer forlorn
Each fairy gave a nice wish
But the uninvited black robe witch
“Die at sixteen…”

“She won’t die but fall asleep
On a spindle her finger will prick”
In rose bower I lay for years
So was the castle in all spheres
The hedge grew tall and thorny
Disguising the sleeping beauty
Waiting for the Prince….

You’ll never know what hit you
A century of sleeping in
All waiting was in vain
Death creeping in my vein
Who would be my savior?
The devil within
You’ll never know what hit you

The Prince did try
To save me and kiss my eyes
But the journey was too long
Full of peril all along
One day passing by another kingdom
He saw their princess sweet as heaven
Couldn’t resist…

You’ll never know what hit you
A century of sleeping in
All waiting was in vain
Death creeping in my vein
Who would be my savior?
The devil within
You’ll never know what hit you

He had the grandest wedding with that princess
A wedding that should be mine
The witch in black robe woke me at my bed side
“Look what is reality
Look love is never free
I’ve made you see”

“Please pass on magic to me”
Black robe flutters at my knee
I’m going to save my own life
Fairytales are nonsense to me
I’m freer than one can ever be
The devil within
I’m no longer the sleeping beauty

The devil within
No longer the sleeping beauty

Anecdote: The Prince and the princess from the other kingdom got married and lived a happy life together. They became the king and the queen of their kingdoms. When their little princess was born, they had a christening feast and invited a number of fairies. All fairies gave their nice wishes. Then came the uninvited witch in black robe, gorgeous face hidden behind a flustering veil. She was the sleeping beauty.

Dark versions of traditional fairy tales always enchant me, so I wrote these lyrics for a dark version of the well-known Sleeping Beauty story, following the tune of my favorite song The Devil Within by Digital Daggers. Hope you enjoy.
