Just Past Daylight
just past daylight, the noon has broken
cups of breakfast taken to go, still uneaten
laying on the table
the car was packed, i was ready to go
still is,
still am.
i'm no earlybird,
no advantage in a morning departure
i was too late, i'll wait another day or a hundred more
a delay gone stale on the counter,
too late for the alarm clock to break its routine
five hours past seven, staying in,
a spring rush kicking in my window,
curtains chime and chimes flutter
i'm lying here with you and cradling
again.
cradling myself, because you're happy
the pages of my rolodex up in the air
numbers, people, so far away,
the unhung calendar, months flipping haphazardly
in the fan's breeze
i can leave but i couldn't
i could leave but i can't
i can't leave my these days
afraid to walk on the floor i dragged the days' dirt on
my feet are too dry and soft to harden and soil again
with the residue of hours away from home
I'm still a child but I need to grow
I'm a yearning man but I need a lighthouse
to promise me a port when i decide to set out for a sail
alone in the dark.
but the sheets are so safe, and so are you
Don't be tempted to lock the door anymore
I had the key, sure, but I lost it somewhere.
Don't be scared for me, like I am.
Keep sleeping, rest assured,
and I can rest in peace.
I'm not going anywhere.
I'm not going anywhere.
