"As long as there is open road, the familiar has the most formidable competitor." - Anonymous

My rose-coloured glasses need cleaning
My eyes are getting tired
You’re burning the skin on my fingers
But I can’t step away from your fire
If once in a blue moon you’re on my mind
Then the moon is blue every night
I used to try not to think of you
But it isn’t worth the fight

Chorus:
The taste of your memory is bitter
But it’s still so sweet to recall
Just when I’ve gained some footing
Your unsteady floor makes me fall
Whenever you’re not with me
It’s easy to pretend that I’m fine
Easy to pretend your smile doesn’t make me
Drunker than a bottle of wine

If you must let me down, do it kindly
Gently, so I don’t bruise
Cover my eyes so I don’t see the lies
I convinced myself were true
It’s hard to see in the nighttime
When the stars have gone blurry from rain
I can’t help but grieve, cuz whenever you leave
You remain on my heart like a stain

Chorus:
The taste of your memory is bitter
But it’s still so sweet to recall
Just when I’ve gained some footing
Your unsteady floor makes me fall
Whenever you’re not with me
It’s easy to pretend that I’m fine
Easy to pretend your smile doesn’t make me
Drunker than a bottle of wine

Bridge:
I want to keep you perfect
In my head, where I can pretend
There was a beginning somewhere
Instead of one long ending
You’ve crushed the glasses under your feet
My rose-coloured view of the world
If I keep trying to fix them
I’ll never be anyone’s girl

A song I wrote while at my cottage on vacation. It loses some of its effect when you can't hear it - I might record a version of myself singing it/playing guitar and post it here so people can see what the song sounds like, not just what the lyrics are.
