Waking in the morning confused by the day

Taking classes in pajamas I want to hit the hay.

Reporters are calling us the generation of zoomers

Forget online school, I need TikTok humor

The school day ends but it’s all the same

More time doing nothing driving me insane.

Sisyphus pushes the boulder, an endless cycle

Of days doing nothing, just sitting idle.

While I sit around and complain, I realize how grateful I am,

Compared to the 18 year old boy fighting in France on Normandy's sand.

Today’s front lines are a little bit stranger

Because a virus, not people, is the true danger

The mask is my shield, Purell my sword

Excalibur will save me from the virus’s horde.

Doctors like heroes, best when assembled together

Couldn’t protect the Earth but sure can avenge her

So thank you to all, great sacrifices have been made

As I sit in bed, it’s you that will be remembered for decades.

The author's comments:

My name is Dylan Weiss, a junior at Tenafly High School. I was inspired to write this because of COVID-19 and how it upended the lives of many. I wrote from the perspective of a student in online school losing motivation, feeling like everday is the same.
