Just a Friend
He’s just a friend
As he picks me up to see a movie.
It’s good to see him
And hear all about what phase he’s going through
He’s just a friend
As we go to a restaraunt
And laugh at the fortune cookie that says
“A friend is a present you give yourself”
He’s just a friend
Because the movie is funny
And the candy is sweet
But at home I’m sad
And you are sour
He’s just a friend
As he refuses
And denies
And jokes
He’s just a friend
As I cry
Because I’m in trouble for spending time with him
When I should be spending time
With you.
He’s just a friend
So he shouldn’t make me cry
And make me think it was you
He’s just a friend
As you tell me
Everything
That is
Wrong
With
Him
He’s just a friend
And I wish I could tell you
He’s just a friend
He’s just a friend.
You are my real father
That man is just a friend.

When I was really little, my parents divorced. When My mother remarried, my stepfather took me in and became my "real father." I wrote this poem to him so that he knows that even though I do love my biological father, he will probably remain "just a friend." My stepdad will always be my actual father. I also liked writing this piece saying he's just a friend instead of you're my real dad because it sounds more like a love poem at first and the mood shift makes it more interesting.
