Rub against my hard-as-rocks skin
I dare you,
You’ll jerk away,
Licking your open scars.
You’ll watch my fits of anger,
And call me “EXPLOSIVE”.
You’ll listen when I shout at the top of my lungs,
And label me “INSENSITIVE”.
You’ll assume the worst,
Walking away without a second thought.
What if I don’t have a problem?
What if you’re wrong?
Maybe I need my hard edge
To keep away what will hurt me
If I disarm again.
He stares daggers,
And I put up my defenses.
I want to cry out to him,
“Is this what you want to be?”
But he wouldn’t listen to me.
Chances are he would ignore me again,
Make me feel like a fool for trying again.
Does he remember when we were just kids
And we would have sleepovers on Friday nights,
Stay up past our bedtime laughing and joking
Watch movies until our eyes drooped shut.
I’ve seen his soft yellow interior,
I know that his core can’t be that hard.
I just have to build my walls high and strong,
Until he sheds his hard-as-rocks skin.
