The Snowflakes
They float down from the thick, unmoving clouds
that crowd the sky and steal the sun’s light,
smiling in their spotless white dresses
and sparkling jewelry.
They tumble and twirl with the grace
of a million ballroom dancers whose feet never hit the floor.
Their descent is slow and whimsical,
yet inevitably,
they reach the ground,
standouts against the shades of brown and grey.
They glimmer and gleam
in all their sky-filled grandeur
then hit the ground noiselessly
and
d i s s i p a t e
Becoming one with the mud and grit and grime of the city,
dirtying their pristine white gowns.
The million ballerinas
dissolve into the stage
and the audience pays no mind.
