Male Mosquito

I am a male mosquito.
Who eats from the golden gateway of the flower
And sprinkles of morning dew and fresh juices,
Wanting no blood, pain, nor tears...

I am alone.
Bees may be around, for they too seek the flowers
But they don’t even throw me a glance-
Because I am a male mosquito

Bees may be there
Butterflies may also
But they don’t want me involved-
Because I am a male mosquito

Please don’t worry.
I won’t bother you,
I won’t buzz around your ears- but you say
“Aren’t you a male mosquito?”

People try to kill me-
They squeeze me with their palms and books..
It scares me-
Why am I a male mosquito?

I am scared of you
But I hope you like me...

Please don’t worry
I am not going to bite you

I won’t bother you when you’re asleep

I just want to be friends.
But I know-
I am a male mosquito.

So I say-
I guess it’s okay if some try to squeeze me,
But I ask you-
Please don’t hate me for who I am...
For I am a male mosquito.

The author's comments:

This is a poem about a person who struggled with friendships when he moved to Bangladesh, not speaking a word of English. He was bullied in school for being an Asian, and wanted to portray how stereotypes do not define a person’s value.

*Male mosquitos differ from female mosquitoes by eating fruits and vegetables. *
