The Porch Swing
I sit on my porch swing,
but it doesn’t swing.
I don’t have the energy
to push to it back and forth.
I wish I did.
A burst of wind blows by,
through the leaves on the trees,
through the jingling wind chimes,
through this porch swing.
The porch swing begins to swing,
and I didn’t have to do a thing.
It’s similar to life, don’t you see?
When a person doesn’t have
the will to live another day,
someone,
or something,
or some place,
can appear,
and give that person the will to live.
It can be something as small as
holding the door open,
or smiling,
at the widow who lives next door.
Or, as big as befriending the girl who always sits alone,
and genuinely caring about her,
and loving her,
even if she doesn’t love herself.
Be the person
that makes someone smile,
that makes someone’s day,
that saves someone’s life.
Be the cool summer breeze,
that blows through the trees,
that jingles the wind chimes,
that swings the porch swing.

I was inspired to write this piece from a writing excerise I did in my english class a few weeks ago. I was writing about the setting of a story I was writing when I got the idea for the analogy that this poem is based upon. I hope that after people read my poem, they will be inspired to go out of their way to make someone's day. Or in other words, "push" somone's "porch swing." Also, I couldn't find a picture of a porch swing so I just used a picture of a swing.
