The Power of Fear
Fear is what makes us dive under the covers in a thunderstorm.
Fear is the butterfly swarm in your gut that soars when “you know who” is around.
Fear is what restricts us from doing dangerously stupid things.
Yet fear has depth to it.
Fear is our protector and our tormentor:
Keeping us alive, but preventing us from living.
Fear envelops our conscience:
Like a thick fog, it blocks our perspective of others to the point where we can only see human silhouettes, with no recognition of uniqueness.
When we lose sight of this, we let ourselves treat others with less respect than ourselves.
When we are afraid, we want desperately to find relief.
Therefore, a skewed perspective is created, and a wall of distrust is built between you and those that can hurt you.
We must keep in mind, that our motivation to act should not be out of fear, but out of love.
When we act out of fear, we let our instincts get the best of us:
Blotting out consideration,
Altering our judgments,
Shielding us from empathy,
And enforcing prejudice.
We often see daredevils test courage’s limits by doing dangerous things,
But that is not the only way to be fearless.
We can demonstrate a different courage,
One that is defined by its understanding,
Its magnanimity, individuality, and willingness to love others.
