That girl
That girl who has the highest GPA
That girl who studies seven hours a day
That girl who in every class has many intelligent things to say
Also happens to be that girl
That girl whose father died
That girl who was asked if she had an eating disorder and lied
That girl who called me on the phone every night for months and cried.
Teachers see that girl
That girl behind the excellent papers and tests they’ve graded
But I see that girl
That girl whose life has truly degraded.
Teachers are supposed to educate their students
Don’t get me wrong, I understand.
But I ask that teachers also realize that there’s more behind that girl than straight-As and a high GPA
And this is my only demand.
We students are not just names in a grade book
We have lives outside of school
For teachers to be completely oblivious to the fact that girl does not eat or sleep
Is a fact unbelievably cruel.
So that girl has the highest GPA
That girl studies seven hours a day
That girl in every class has many intelligent things to say
But I’m afraid that girl is not going to stay.
