"..though warm as summer it was fresh as spring." (Thomas Hardy) ("Far from the Madding crowd")

I remember Marnie

She was in my ninth grade class

The girl with the wonky glasses

And the kindest smile

I have ever known.

She knew things we didn’t

Like why the brain remembered

And what gametes were.

She was really smart

In a way the others didn’t like.

Her shoes were shiny and black

And laced up with fading Velcro

And her rucksack

Was filled with badges

Really cool badges.

I wish I could twist back time

And tell Marnie

It was okay to like the Beatles

And those girls

They just weren’t worth it.

I wish I could tell her

I was really grateful for the time

She whispered the answer in History

And wouldn't even take my thanks.

I wish I could tell her sorry.
I’m sorry I watched them

Ruin you, Marnie

I’m sorry for all the tears

No one

Heard you cry.

I’m sorry kindness

Was not enough

For those girls

And I’m sorry I never told you

I liked your glasses.

I remember Marnie.

She sat two desks in front of mine

And she knew things others didn’t.

I like to think she’s floating now

Free to exist.

I’m sure we’ve all known a Marnie.

I just wish I’d got to know mine.

But I know she doesn’t hate me

Doesn’t blame me

I know she’s smiling now.

That was Marnie.
