“It’s what’s on the inside that counts.”
I said as I brush my hair.
“I’m funny, sweet, and smart.”
I said as I applied eyeliner.
“I have a great personality.”
I said as I put on my heels.
“I’m confident and brave.”
I said as I inspect my nails.
“It’s what’s on the inside that counts.”
I repeat as I avert my eyes
Gorgeous on the outside, empty inside
Repeating once again
Society’s prettiest lies

I find it funny how so many people say inner beauty is more important than outer beauty, yet everything they do contradicts it. This poem is dedicated to the truth, the reality that as beautiful as it sounds to say that the inside is more important than the outside the reality is that outer beauty is still very important in society. People judge books by their covers, even if they shouldn't. If we lived in a world where inner beauty dominated outer beauty then the world would be a better place, but sadly as hard as we try to pretend the outside doesn't matter, it does.
