Happiness is as a butterfly which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but which if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.
- Nathaniel Hawthorne

“Have you ever been to a church before?”
Said the little girl of four.
I say no.
Why should I?
Her hand hits her face, She breathes “oh my.”

“If you don’t read the book,
God won’t give you another look.”
Who is god?
Where is he?
Has he done anything at all for me?

“He sure has,” she spoke.
I began to choke.
A mystery man!
Whom I had never met,
I was starting to feel regret.

For the times where I hadn’t made a lurch,
To the place they called church.
She said that I am going to hell.
Well, that makes no sense!
I just wanted to leave her, and jump over that fence.

I asked her why?
Why am I sentenced to die?
“Because you don’t believe in him,”
I never said that!
“Yes you did!” the little girl spat.

My heart raced,
“Who would I have to face?”
The so-called Devil?
I never have done wrong,
I just like to sing songs.

“You have sinned,”
She said to me.
I did what?
“Sinner!”
“Is that like a winner?”

I never saw her again,
My happiness began to wane.
My mom hugged me,
“This isn’t fair!”
She said, “Don’t worry. You aren’t going anywhere.”

When I was little, I was constantly harassed for not attending a church regularly. This poem is how people approached me about it.
