Waiting
Three hours.
That’s how long we waited.
Your children waited for you.
While we waited, she sat at the door.
How does a mother tell her children
That daddy isn’t coming to get them
On father’s day?
I finally gave up.
But your son, the one who saw and
Understood what I could not, still sat.
Waiting.
Hoping his dad didn’t let him down again.
But you did.
You let us down…again.
We waited for three hours, while you sat at the bar
With her.
And because of those three hours,
You lost three years.
Do you know what you missed?
My life.
You were gone for most of it.
Out of 17 years, you have seen 7.
Did you ever realize what happens in 10 years?
My birthdays.
First sleepover.
First boyfriend.
You missed my first date.
My first break up.
But he wasn’t the first guy to make me cry.
That was you.
Mom was there for every second of it.
So was the one I now call dad.
The only time he has missed is before he met my mom.
You are my father.
He is my dad.
