The Game

I stepped on the field when I was 12.

Standing tall but weighted down with fear.

It was the first game of the season

Beneath my feet was the turf that so many others had been victorious.

And I wondered,

Would it be the same for me?

As I walked onto the field

The sky burning a bright, beautiful, and vivid blue.

The team makes me feel safe almost as a family would
I turned away to see all the people in the stands

Here to support us.

I looked at the team and said “OC ON THREE.”

They repeated back to me “1,2,3 OC!”

We walked on the field.

It was a bright sunny day.

The sun scorching down, a dessert

Or that was what it seemed

As the ball flew up in the air

She caught it

Then the ball passed to me

I caught it and bolted for the goal

My stick in my sweaty hands,

I could taste dryness in my mouth before I shot

As the ball glided into the goal

I knew

This would be my forever sport.

We walked off that field

We were on top of the world.

I am thirteen years old, live in Oregon City, and play for their youth girls lacrosse team. My poem is about the first game of last year's season
