Purple was the color of your hair when you left me
Purple is the color of the bruises you left on my heart when you moved on
Purple is the color of pain
Written in your name

I see you in shades of violet
The color of that neon sign you gave me for my birthday
I see you in the pastel of the sun rising in the early morning sky
The color of the New England Aster reminds me of you saying goodbye

Then there are days I don’t miss you; moments I don’t remember the hurt you caused
But I see the color purple and I think of what we used to have
I don’t remember the bruises turned black, or the blood that ran red
I remember the laughter. The smiles, and the smell of lavender while we lay on your bed

I see an Ultra Violet Monster Energy
And I forget about the scars that you left
I remember instead: the smell of fall
Spray paint running down the wall

You wrote your name on my heart, too. Carved it there
All in shades of purple. Dripping with the blood of me
So slowly I am pulled under
And left here to suffer in your color

The author's comments:

This poem is about a former friend of mine who was very toxic and things didn't work out. It is universal, though, and doesn't specify any relationship, so that's cool...
