Begged for, borrowed, and stolen,

You’re the one thing nobody can’t get enough of.

The line between want and need blurred in your shadow

What difference will it make?

Arms and legs lost for your blessings.

Your color represents greed and disgust.

Cross fingered deals, you're deceitful.

Severed palms clutch you with want

You are survival.

Life without you is improbable.

Most will take you to the grave,

Where God takes all prophets.

You plague the thoughts of those without you,

Forcing obsession.

You are the definition of success.

Your malevolence shows mercy to none.

The best things in life are without you.

Shaking fingers implore you.

I can hardly stand the sight of you.

How much loss must one endure for you to gain?

My name is Nicholas. I am a 17 year old senior currently attending Lapeer High School. I just moved to Lapeer last summer of 2021, and I love to read and skateboard. I am enjoying Ms. Summerlee’s creative writing class so far, because it has placed me outside of my comfort zone by focusing primarily on poetry. When I initially signed up for the class I had expected that we were going to be focusing chiefly on prose, but working on improving my poetry skills has given me a newfound appreciation for poetry and lyricism.

I chose my poem “Money” because I enjoyed writing about how money is the source of all evil. In “Money” I described money as a sort of unavoidable menace to society that should be detested as much as humanly possible. I was inspired by the hardships experienced by friends and family members, and how their hardships shaped who they are today.
