burning heart

September 5, 2021
By Anonymous

i'm chasing after embers

drifting in the bitter air

as you let yourself burn and smolder

under the spark of guilt

in every dark moment,

pieces of you mix with tears in my eyes

i'm reaching

grasping at the air

for those glowing flames floating through the sky

but i fall back onto the ground,

onto concrete,

bloodied knees and bruised elbows,

hands empty,

like the cage lying bare in your chest

tell me, darling

who promised you the stars

but stole your heart instead

I'm 16 years old, and my life hasn't been easy. Poetry stole my heart and saved my life. I hope my poetry can help someone out in the great wide world feel a little less alone and a little more understood.
