There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature—the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter. —Rachel Carson

All those nights,

When you'd just howl,

At the vast expanse of space,

And the moon,

So bright in the dark.

All those times,

You felt like giving up,

And letting yourself collapse,

And you didn't.

And all those feelings,

Behind a howl,

What are they really?

Because a howl,

Is more than an empty sound,

Is more than a noise to fear,

Is more than what you're thought of.

A howl encloses feelings,

Traps hopes and dreams,

Sends wishes to the moon.

So howl every night,

Let your feelings show,

In that single lasting note.

And howl,

For when you lost your pack.

Howl,

To get them back.

The author's comments:

Usually my poems are structured and rhyming. I never really understood free verse poems. But one of my friends is a really talented free verse poet, and her poems are so beautiful she kind of inspired me to try to be free with my poems. My first proper attempt at free style, I thought maybe I should so it on my favourite subjects, wolves, and how there is more behind their howl than what is to meet the eye.

@CrazyCatLady6 thanks so much! I did try, and it was actually more fun than I expected. I am growing to like and appreciate free verse more and I have done a few more on teenink. Although the poem I did that got editors choice was my normal style, probably a suitable hint that structured is my strong point. But that's not to say I won't continue doing free verse as well, now that I have found I like it.
