"The Ballad of the Astronaut"
In the deep, soundless nothingness of space
There floated a lonely astronaut
Who had an air tank slowly, slowly running out
At what time he would have no air left he knew naught.
With an eerie calmness he drifted along
Gazing at the glittering stars surrounding him
Far off was the moon glowing brightly
Even farther he could see the sun, full of vigor and vim.
The astronaut did not weep for his doomed fate
Nor could he bring himself to care at all.
His life, cut short and consisting of little excitement,
Was nothing more than an endless pitfall.
So he waited for the last of his oxygen to drain away
And his eyes glazed over as he stared at the blackness.
Seconds turned into minutes and minutes turned into hours
While his usual composed and organized thoughts soon became aimless.
He thought of his ancient orange cat back home
And slowly losing friend after friend, one by one.
He then thought of volunteering for a trip to the red planet.
Where he would gladly leave behind everyone.
He thought of the weeds in his garden that always managed to grow back.
And the monthly calls from his mother.
He thought of the whirring of the rocketship beneath him
A thrill like no other.
There was a sudden piercing beep
And the astronaut felt his stomach drop.
His oxygen was almost completely drained
He could have sworn for only a moment that his heart did stop.
In the deep, soundless nothingness of space
There floated a lonely astronaut
Who had an air tank that had completely run out.
And as his vision waned, from his mind he expelled every last thought.
