Sandy Dreams
I am on a beach,
Grains of sand encrust my feet.
The waters ahead are calm.
It’s still surface sparkles like gems on glass
In the dying light of the setting sun.
I am happy;
Smiling.
Then the sun fully sinks into the ocean,
Fully engulfing my world in darkness.
The waters begin to shift,
As if upset by the sudden lack of light.
A huge wave is building up,
Threatening to collapse,
Every second it stands it gets bigger.
It’s crashing down.
I run,
As fast and as far as I can.
It’s too late.
I’m floating,
Almost weightless.
Fish and sharks swim by,
As if unaware of my presents.
The bitter saltiness of the sea
Floods my mouth as I cry for help.
I hear nothing in return.
My lungs feel like they’re about to burst.
Adults and children alike swim by,
All breathing and smiling
As if they were still on land,
And not in an ocean.
My head feels light,
And yet I am still sinking to the bottom.
My eyelids are heavy.
So…
So………
Heavy……………
I wake up.
The ghost of a memory of a dream tugs at the back of my mind.
I take a deep breath.
It was all a dream.
