A purple balloon
A big purple balloon with a silly face drawn on it in black sharpie
'Black? Why not navy?'
You insist
'Because black looks better on purple than navy'
I say
And continue my story
A big purple balloon with a goofy smilie face on it
In BLACK sharpie
There was a girl
Holding the balloon of course
'What was her name?'
You ask
'Beth,'
I say
'Thats my name!'
You say
'I know'
I replied
The little girl's name was Beth
Beth loved the balloon
She thought of it as her best friend
'Well thats silly!'
You said
'But,
Beth was very young,'
I explained
She named the balloon
Arabella.
'What a pretty name. Kind of like yours, Bella.'
You said
'Yeah,'
I agreed
Beth loved Arabella
Very, very much
And somehow
Arabella never deflated
'I don't think that's possible,'
You said
'It doesn't matter if it's possible or not, it's my story so I can tell it however I want!'
I said, losing patience
She was Beth's best friend
Until Beth went to school for the very first time
That day Beth found a new best friend
Her name was Sally
And that day
When Beth came home
She found Arabella
And took her outside and
'And what?'
You said
And Beth let go of the string
She watched Arabella fly away
A tear in Beth's eye
You opened your mouth to say something but I shushed you
Later that day
During dinner
Beth's parents asked her how her day was
And Beth said
It was okay
'What!'
You said, surprised
'Beth said her day was okay,'
I repeated
'But she let go of Arabella!'
You said
'Yeah, and?'
I asked
'But-but, she gave away her best friend!'
'Yeah but she had a new one. I thought you said it was silly for a balloon to be someone's best friend.'
'But that was before, and now...'
'You understand?'
I said
You sighed
'Yeah,'
We were both quiet for a minute
'Bella, do I have to let go?'
You asked
'Yeah,'
I said
'Goodbye,'
You walked out the door.
'Okay,'
I said.
