Sphinx, the Riddle Teller

I was walking towards my city, Thebes, one day,
When a creature blocked my way.
“I am the Sphinx, the riddle teller, and who are you?”
“I am Jonathan of Thebes, oh Riddle Master.”
“Very well then. Here is my riddle:
Which creature in the morning goes on
four feet, at noon on two, and in the

evening upon three? If you do not answer correctly, I will kill and eat thee.”
I thought and pondered, pondered and thought,
Trying to find the answer that I sought.
After retrieving the simple answer, I cleared my throat and said,

“It is man. When he is a baby, he crawls on hands and feet and when he is a man,
He walks on two legs for he is fit and strong. However, when he is old- in the eve of his life- he uses a staff for he is soon dead.”
“You, man of Thebes, have been my dread.
The other travelers are long gone dead.
You may pass.”
The Sphinx stepped out from the middle
And flew off on her eagle wings.
She jumped off a cliff and into the rocks,
Killing her in the process.

Now to this very day,
You can always walk the way
Without being asked a riddle.
The roads are clear from the evil
Beast;
Therefore on this day, my city has a feast.
I wish you safe travel and quick speed,
My friends,
Because your story does not have any ends.
Good luck in your travels!
