(Inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings')

They made their way,
Through sleet and rain,
Through the snow and wind they came,
O'er land and stone and sea they came,
Ne'er to be seen again.

As they came, they left no mark,
To show from whence they did embark,
On the day that showed no sun.
On the day that showed no sun they came,
Ne'er to be seen again.

They approched the mountain,tall and grim,
And no fear was felt within.
As they climed to highest peak,
Their effort seeming small and meek,
Their bodies broken, hearts so weak,
With their hearts so weak they came,
Ne'er to be seen again.

They reached a cave mouth, open wide,
with fires from the deep inside.
There their burden to relieve,
And peaceful rest to receive,
To free the world from its dark plight,
And thrust it from unending night.
They sacrificed what little they had,
And now I tell their tale so sad
Yet their spirits still wander,
free and grim,
Ne'er to be seen again.
