To think it was the end

Innocence condemned

Nine years old

Hushed prophesies

Never foretold

Small hands gripping

My own neck

Travesties

I’d been subject

And horrors

Oh, the horrors I held

My little body trembled

As my hazy eyes welled

But then at that moment

A face came to mind

A curly-headed baby

How could I be so blind?

To miss her life,

To leave her behind!

“I love her,

I love her!”

I sobbed to myself

It was far too early

To say my farewells

Because to love a sister

Is like loving oneself
