Holy Thursday
Holy Thursday--
Church lights dim
and candles are extinguished.
We watch in silence as they strip the altar
in preparation for tomorrow.
No light illuminates the stained glass, tonight,
and no candles glow warmly,
shedding light on us all.
The abbey is eerie and cold
with too many shadows,
too many shadows.
When we rise,
the gentle susurrus that typically
fills the room
and God's ears,
has vanished.
The dead air wafts all around the parish.
In stone-cold silence we will enter tomorrow,
and in stone-cold silence we exit,
preparing for the coming.
