Jesus vs. Religion
Over the 2,000 year course of Christianity, many things have changed. Many people today view Christianity as a simple religion, a set of laws and rituals, but Jesus came to get rid of the law. As it says in the NIV version of Galatians in verse 3:24, So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we may be justified by faith. Our faith in Jesus is what saves us, and an individual relationship with all of us is what he longs for. The real difference between Jesus and religion is that Jesus fills a natural void in our heart that religion cannot fill.
Many people directly connect religion to church but church is not religion. Church is where you go to learn about the life Jesus wants us to live. So church is great but there are still churches out there that are the source of this problem. Dr. Jack Graham, Pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, stated in an interview with cbslocal.com that there’s a lot of churches that are just full of religion and very little about Jesus. More churches must begin to preach the works of Jesus and become less worried about the ‘rules’ of being a Christian.
Faith and grace is God made, therefore has no imperfections. If you put your faith in God, then your faith will never fail. Religion is made by man and has many imperfections. Religion can never make you fill complete, nor does it perform miracles, but God does.
Going to church and doing good works is great, but those things alone do not save us. Actually the definition of religion is being bound to a set of laws and rituals in order to gain salvation. In the topic of gaining salvation, in John 14:6 Jesus states I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me. I do not see laws and rituals in that verse. Jesus clearly states that salvation is through the acceptance of Christ alone.
The problem in today’s society is that too many Christians are just going through the motions of what they think “being a Christian” means. Being a Christian is not only going to Church and being a good person. That’s all good, but so many churches are leaving out the main part. You have to get to know Jesus. He is alive and everywhere and he wants to know you. So go and seek him and find him and you fill finally understand what you have been missing out on.
