Trust in the Process
“These trainings are way too early mom!” I exclaimed as I slowly got up out of my covers.
“Can I skip today?” I kept whining and trying to convince her but she never budges into anything I ask.
I realize that arguing with her is no use, it never is, so I slowly began to put all my clothes for practice on and get ready for an 8 hour day of exhausting training.
When I finished getting ready I rapidly hopped in my moms car who was unceasingly honking the horn at me. We got there within 25 minutes, I was still so tired I could hardly keep my eyes open. I scampered into the gym as the buzzer horned and practice was ready to begin. I walked up to a couple of my goofball friends and greeted them with a “ Bro I'm so tired ” as I solemnly explained the whole situation to them. They displayed empathy towards me as we each picked up our jump ropes and got ready for coach to call everyone to the middle.
“ Round it up boys! ” He quickly walked to the middle of the basketball court and the whole team followed. We waited for what he was going to say next praying that it would have nothing to do with running.
“ Today we will be getting in tip top shape. Running, running, and probably a little more running. ” He laughed. I never understand why he makes us run so much, why being “in shape” is such a big deal. Anyways I just sighed but quickly got over the fact that we are going to run either way, so why complain, there's no point.
“ 15 Suicides ” He set up the time for 8 minutes and then said “ Go ”and we all starting running as fast as we could trying to please him.
Approximately 8 minutes and 6 seconds later everyone on our team crossed the baseline of their final suicide meaning that we finally finished.
“ 5 minute break ” coach yelled as he brought out the cooler filled with water.
“ I’m so thirsty I could chug 5 bottles of water ” Ahmad gulped down 3 bottles but started choking and everyone began to laugh when they saw. But just to our luck our break was over and practice had to be resumed. When Coach said “ On the line! ” we knew that this would be a very, very long practice.
“ Can we maybe run some drills coach, my legs are killing me. ” Preston continuously complained.
“ No son, we have a huge tournament next month and you guys need to be in the best shape possible if you want to keep up with the best teams in the whole country. Talent can only take you so far, you need hard work to elevate you from the others. ”
Coach Teddy gave us each 2 minutes to run full court and back 17 times. I'm thinking “ Goodness this man is crazy, how in the world are we going to do that in 2 minutes.” But I kept that to myself, knowing that the best thing to do is just get it over with.
“ GO! ” Coach Teddy shouted and we all rapidly dashed full court and back, I Quickly gained momentum and started running uncontrollably. On my 6th round there and back I ran so fast I just couldn't stop myself, I tried slowing down but my legs just kept moving like when the chain on your bicycle breaks. I slowly saw a wall getting closer and closer and my only thought was to simply just jump.
I leaped into the air, uneducated about what was about to happen. I kicked my feet off the concrete wall and just sprung out into the open air.
“ AHHHHHHHHHHHHH! ” is all you heard in the gym for a solid 10 seconds. I started to cry, just absolutely bawl. I glanced at my leg and immediately knew it was broken. For it was all bloody and you could see a bump on my shin, as if a bone snapped or popped out. Everyone stared in awe, they also began to cry. Coach Teddy dialed 911 and an ambulance was sent to pick me up and drive me to the hospital. The pain I felt was so excruciating, and looking at it only made it worse. I didn't know what to think, or what to do. All I could do was just cry and ask God “ Why me Lord, Why me? ” My Mom showed up before the ambulance did, and as soon as she laid her eyes on me all she could do was cry. She cried more than I did, she then began whispering in my ear and she said, “ Everything will be alright baby I promise, just hold in there. ” After 5 more minutes of everyone weeping, the ambulance finally arrived.
“ WEEEEE-OHHHHH WEEEEE-OHHHHH ” is all you heard.
“ I love you Gavin ” my mom cried as I'm slowly being put inside the back of the ambulance.
“ I'll meet you there baby ” she yells once again.
I finally calmed down. I still don't know why this happened to me, but I heard a voice speak to me. A voice so powerful and trusting. It was God.
“ For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. ” God spoke to me.
All I kept thinking about was what God told me. How he said not to worry because he already knows what is going to happen. Everything is under his control, and there's no need to worry about anything because I know that I have God on my side.
