The Quad Accident
As I opened up my eyes for the first time that day, I looked out the window to a bright sun. As I opened the door to walk outside the sound of Bald Eagles chirping to each other from a distance echoed through the air, and the sound of the creek flowing around the beaver dam.
It was Spring break of 2015, It all started when I was the first one up at the crack of daylight and while I waited for everyone to get up I decided that it would be a good idea to walk down by the creek and try to spot any trout. I didn’t see any trout but the sound of ducks echoed through the sound of the creek. By the time that I got back to my cabin My dad was up, and asked him if I could go for a quad ride. He said “Sure go ahead, I will call you when everybody wakes up.”
As I started up my quad I let the engine heat up then, I was gone headed down the trail. As I entered the woods I spooked up 2 deer and right then I thought that this was going to be an interesting ride. As I was headed down the trail deeper in the woods I went, as I turn the corner “BANG!” I remember looking up and seeing the sky, and looking to my left 2 feet off the trail was the quad on it’s side. So I laid back down hoping it was just a dream, but I woke up again and realized it wasn’t a dream. The first thing that came to my mind was that my dad will kill me.
As I attempted to stand up, pain shot through me. I fell right back over, like a baby trying to walk for the first time. As I slowly tried to get up again I grabbed a small pine tree for support, and finally got on my feet. As I headed over to the quad I tripped on the log that I flipped the quad on. As I slowly approached the quad I was begging that it wasn’t damage. I was as nervous as a kid waiting to get his big test back. As I slowly walked around the quad I sighed a relief, Thank goodness it wasn't damaged. I decided to wait a minute to regain my strength back. As I was sitting on a log, I felt a vibrate in my pocket, it was my dad who sent me a text ten minutes ago. My heart started racing a million miles per hour, and my mind went to flipping the quad back over before he comes looking for me. Scene it was on its side I gave it a good push but it almost flipped back over I was too tired. My immediate thoughts were to flip the quad back over so I gave it another push and sure enough it flipped back upright.
Now that the hard part was over now the easy part. As I tried to start it, it wouldn’t start so then I thought this is the easy part. As I started the quad I felt a big bump, I turned around I realized that the log was still there, so I shoved it so that wouldn’t happen again. As I was heading down the trail back toward my cabin and my dad was driving down the trail looking for me. Immediately when I shut off the quad he looked mad. He said “Why didn’t you answer my calls, I didn’t know where you were.” I told him that “I couldn’t feel it vibrate.”
He said ok.
As we headed back toward our cabin I thought if I should tell him about me flipping the quad. I told myself I should just to be safe. So when we back I told him I flew off the quad because a log was in the way. “At least you are ok.” Said dad.
Overall, what I have learned from this story is that I should be more careful when I am riding on the trails and should be more cautious of my surroundings. When I am riding on trails I should tell them where and when I will be back.
