In Line
I should’ve gotten takeout, it was only ten minutes away, but it’s too late now, I already given the man my order. You know, the waiter that comes out when the line gets too long. Perhaps to entertain your attention while instantaneously locking you into your decision, to keep your money here and not elsewhere. A smart ploy from the business owner.
I should’ve found a friend or starved an extra two hours until my parents got home just so I wouldn’t have to listen to the meaningless chatter around me. It’s surprising I’d say, that I was the only one who ordered in Japanese; I'm not even remotely fluent. I guess it’s just another reminder that Covid is no longer relevant, and that tourists now roam the streets. I hope they don't realize I speak their language.
I should've brought more homework. I finished the chapter I was supposed to read. I guess this will be the one time I read past what I’m supposed to. I refuse to open my phone as it makes me look sad. The book, at least, makes me seem studious amongst the people with friends and family around them.
I should’ve worn my earphones earlier. I flinch as I hear the baby from that family crying. I increase the volume of my music, creating a bubble protecting me from the buzz of the room. A businesswoman sits next to me, with sharp movements and quick ordering skills. I straightened my back and stared at my freshly cooked ramen. Next to me a college student poured his friend a cup of tea. I poured myself one too.
I should’ve eaten faster, like that businesswoman, who slurped through her ramen, scarfed down her rice, and left.

I never go out to eat unless it's with my family or my friends. Those who eat alone are busy, hardworking salarymen, and those who don't have friends.
