It started out as a pretty normal day, I woke up to go to school as usual. When I got to school I went to my classes like I always did. My friend and I had decided to go kayaking after school that day with one of our other buddies, like we did every wednesday. “I’ll go over there after school to get the other kayak. You want to come with me?” I asked kyle.

“Yea, It will be faster if I come with you to help.”

“Ok then we can just go right from your house to put in at the river.” We had it all planned out. what time we were going and where we were going to get in and out, the only problem was it was only third hour, we had to go the rest of the day knowing we were going kayaking after school.

later that day when we got out of school I ended up going to his house for a while before we left to hang out for a little bit. i can remember it like it wa yesterday, it was about 75 degrees out and not a cloud in the sky, his brother, one other friend, kyle and I were sitting in the driveway just watching as the cars went by. “hey we should probably get going soon” said kyle.

“Nah we got a little time I said”,  after about ten minute we took off to the river. we had gotten about a mile down the road when I decided to go a different way; down Wylie road, as the music was playing and we were getting hype to go kayaking I lost control of my truck. we slid sideways down the road for about 40 ft before we hit the side and started to roll. “S***, s***, are you okay I yelled to kyle”,

“yea you good” he said back,

“yea” little did we know that the truck was already on fire as we were sitting in it. as I was hanging there I realized that my seatbelt was jammed up, luckily I had a knife on me that I was able to cut the seatbelt off of me. as we climbed out of the wreckage people pulled over to the side of the road and ran to help us and make sure we were ok.

I can remember one lady ran out of her house and asked if we needed anything, we were close enough to her house that I was able to ask if we could use her hose to maybe control the fire. I thought she was going to get it but she completely ignored me and went back inside.

“Ok, thats cool” I said after she walked away.

“dude we have to get back it getting out of control”, Kyle said as we could see the gas dripping from the truck. We ran to a nearby field, When we were about 500 feet away from it  the whole thing blew up. It was so surreal that I thought I was having a terrible nightmare. But I wasn’t, it was real, and there was nothing I could do at that point but watch as my baby burned into a crisp.

When the fire department got there they put out the fire then wanted to talk to me.

“So what kind of car was this?” asked the firemen. That’s when I realized how bad it really was. They couldn’t even recognize that it was a pickup truck, I thought to myself. Me and kyle just looked at each other, I knew we were both thinking the same thing, what are our parents going to say.

I called my dad and told him. He thought I was kidding, “I wish I was dad, but I really f***ed up. You need to come now.”  Next thing I knew he had hung up and was there in about two minutes. I thought he was going to be furious, but him and my mom just gave me a hug and said that they didn’t care about any of it.

“All that stuff can be replaced, you guys can’t” my mom said. Kyle then called his mom, he told her what had happened.

“Ok is everyone ok” she asked.

“Yes” kyle replied

“Well I left the keys to the truck on the counter if you want to use our truck to go get the kayaks” him mom told him.

“Mom did you just hear what I told you? we aren’t going kayaking anymore” he told her.

Kyle told me that his dad was going to come pick him up, and  that to me was the scariest part. For one I had never met him. So much for a good first impression. When he got there I could barely look at him I was so embarrassed, I mean I did just put his son’s life in danger. He didn’t have much to say to me besides he was also glad that everyone was ok and that it was a good learning experience for us.

The next day we both had to come to school and explain to our teachers why we didn’t have any of our work from the whole year due to the fact that our backpacks were in my truck, along with about $2000 worth of other things

When we told them, they thought it was just a lame excuse for not having our homework, but when they saw the pictures they were stunned that we had made it out of that alive, and so were we. That was one of my worst days at school because of course everyone already heard about it and al day over and over I had to tell the story of what happened. eventually people stopped talking about it, but I thought it would never end.
