The Knife
She lunged for the knife on the floor. Sobbing as she tried to grab it briskly. Her hand clutched its handle. She slid to the corner of the kitchen lowering herself, rubbing her back across the cabinets. Her hands cradled the knife one over the other. Trying to stay quiet she sat down bending her knees to block her body. Just for a second she closed her eyes. Flooding through her mind all of the other times she has tried to get away from him but after it all, he always found her again and again. It came down to this moment. Trying to lower the sounds of her sobs, her tears quietly rolled down her face, now drying – making her cheeks sticky. She scanned the room through her tear glazed eyes. She turned her head trying to see out the window above the sink without moving an inch. Listening for his footsteps. Wondering if it would be best to run.
