August 2022 Fiction Contest: A Farmer's Shocking End
Audrey wandered to the pasture, still shocked by the loss of her father. The detectives’ final words still echoed through her mind: “Hanged himself with the milk hoses. Probably upset about selling all the cows and stopping farming.”
She inhaled the sweet clover scent and let the afternoon sun warm her. Well, she would never sell. She had told her father so repeatedly.
“Suicide,” she said to the cows. “The detectives confirmed it. Just you and me now. Forever.”
Once Audrey left the pasture, her favorite cow Esther turned to the cow beside her. “You see? Nobody ever suspects the cows.”
TW: suicide, death
My grandparents own a dairy farm and I personally enjoy helping out with all of the cows. I wanted to create flash fiction that involved them. After all, they are my favorite animals!
