A Day With Daddy
It's me and daddy’s day together.
Daddy swoops me up in his arms.
“You ready to finally plant your apple seeds?”
I was more than ready.
I didn’t even let Daddy help me get dressed today.
I picked out my pink tutu and green leotard from the tall dresser.
Daddy always calls me his princess;
I feel like one today!
Daddy just got home yesterday.
The last time I saw him, he whispered to me
he was leaving for a while and got into Mommy’s car.
I was left with Grammy for the night,
wondering what Daddy meant.
Mommy gave me a clue.
“He is away getting help to be a better Daddy for you.”
is what Mommy told me.
Mommy's eyes got wet.
I thought my Daddy was the best.
I didn’t understand why I couldn’t be with him.
The TV man says
“Overdose Epidemic Touches Every Part of the Country”.
I think of the first two words again over and over in my head
but I couldn’t tell you what they mean.
I finish my fruit loops and go outside to find Daddy.
I found Daddy. Daddy is shaking hard.
Too hard.
I can’t see Daddy's eyes,
and his lips are blue.
Near daddys hand is a white bottle.
I can’t see anything anymore.
I’m shaking hard.
Too hard.
Mommy found me in the backyard with Daddy.
Daddy hasn’t woken up.
Daddy looks like a monster.
Mommy screams as she scoops me in her arms
and carries me away from Daddy.
She puts the top of the bottle in his nose and pushes the red button.
Daddy isn’t waking up.
Daddy never wakes up.
