Jay Gatsby's letter
Dearest Daisy,
The recent news of your engagement to Mr. Tom Buchanan has reached my ears and stung my heart. As I sit at my desk and write this letter to you I reminisce on the grand adventures we had together years ago. Our young, careless, love that I had always longed to experience the rest of my days. As my pen glides down the paper I cannot help but think of the future we could have had if not for war and the world's evil. Many times I pictured myself finally having the means to buy you the grandest ring known to man and to put it on your finger and wed. You would be dressed in the finest material for your wedding dress; for you deserve nothing less.
I want nothing more than to return matters to the way they were in Louisville. The thought of our kiss and your hand holding mine has never left my mind since the day it occurred. While we only had a month, it was the most exhilarating time of my life. At first, the news of your engagement brought me to rage, even tears. I was filled with much anger, so much, I imagined killing your own fiancé. Since then my emotions have simmered and I have realized the foolishness of my thoughts. Though never once was that anger directed toward you, Daisy. My heart has always held only love and compassion for you in the purest form.
Nevertheless, my heart also holds no grudge or evil against you. When we met I had none of the resources nor funds to provide you with the comfortable life you well deserve. Daisy, never forget that while you deserve luxury, you also deserve true, genuine love over any dollar or diamond. No amount of wealth could ever give you true love and happiness. A heart as pure as yours should be preserved in a glass case, never to be damaged or broken by man. I hope these thoughts were in your mind as you devoted the rest of your life to Mr. Buchanan with a ring.
I couldn't help but find any piece of information I could about Tom to ensure that you were making no mistake devoting yourself to him. Fortunately, numerous individuals told me he is a decent man with a commendable reputation – and, Daisy – while I still long for your company in my home, my heart hopes nothing but the best for you. You can now have the life our younger selves fantasized about.
Maybe in another life, Daisy, we could have grown old together, lived our life with nothing but bliss and ignorance. Bought a grand home and had beautiful children to carry on our legacy. I hope this letter finds you well. While my heart will forever have a place for you, I also wish for you to have a life no short of grand. If that means marrying Tom, then so be it.
Sincerely,
Jay Gatsby.
