August 2022 Fiction Contest: Death Mourns
It has been a long time since Death lived. Empires have fallen and been reborn, though the cruelty of humanity remains. It matters not the year or the century or the millennia: they are all the same. Each second stained red with blood that should never have been spilled. Death should be used to it by now. Used to the tears and emptiness she leaves behind. But her heart is still human. It pounds inside her chest during every age — during every death. Her heart should have gone silent long ago. And yet, as Death takes a mortal’s hand, she weeps.
