Warframe: An Amazing Game Being Squandered
Before we get to the reasoning behind the name of this review, let me explain what Warframe even is. Warframe is a free-to-play action MMO. It was released in 2013 by Digital Extremes. Despite the game releasing with a rather small amount of content, players saw potential and the game began turning a profit. Over the years Warframe would receive updates adding story quests, weapons, levels spanning the solar system, and more. The game is known for being a “free-to-play game done right”; meaning that you can play the game and experience nearly all the game's content without spending a dime.
This all sounds well and good, a great game you can play without spending any money, the issue is Digital Extremes themselves. Digital Extremes has gotten into the habit of trying to outdo themselves with each new update and expansion for the game, this is shown no better than in the Empyrean Update. Empyrean was supposed to be a massive expansion, adding ships that could be piloted by players, capital ship battles, and cooperation between players on planets and in space. Only one of those promises was fulfilled, as ‘Railjack’ ships were added, but there were no capital ship fights, and no interplanetary coop. Even then, the update was filled with bugs and glitches. This update led to the player count dropping by a staggering 13%.
Many in the Warframe community feel that Digital Extremes is simply not listening to them, and there seems to be a lack of direction in the Developers. The game recently turned seven years old, and I’ve put almost 700 hours into the game; I love it. And for that reason it is all the more frustrating and heartbreaking to see the developers slowly run the game into the ground.
Despite the doom and gloom of this review, Warframe is still a great game. It’s just that it’s starting to turn in the wrong direction. I simply hope that the developers come to their senses, and turn the proverbial ship away from the iceberg before it’s too late.
