Released in 1939 “Goodbye, Mr. Chips” remains a classic to this day. Effortlessly telling the simple story of a professor’s life, the film is a compelling piece that will leave you laughing and crying at the same time. Robert Donat expertly plays Mr. Chips throughout the characters life, appearing at times as a young man, and at others as an old one. The movie follows Mr. Chips’ progression from an inexperienced young teacher, to a man awkwardly in love, miserably bereaved, finally self-fulfilled. Not exactly a love story, but neither a drama, nor a war film, “Goodbye, Mr. Chips” has something for everyone. Mr. Chips’ life is far from extraordinary, but it holds both tragedy and redemption. In today’s world of fast-paced action flicks and CGI, it is refreshing to enjoy a well told, well-acted story.
Starring Robert Donat, Greer Garson, and Terry Kilburn. Directed by Sam Wood.
