The novel I am writing about is called Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Rick Riordan wrote this novel in 2005. The genre of this novel is fantasy, Greek Mythology, and young adult fiction. The novel, which I personally liked very much, was set in modern time, where the Ancient Greek Gods exist. The locations of which this story takes place varies throughout the story, but the story mostly takes place in New York and Camp Half-Blood. Camp Half-Blood is the place where many Greek demigods live safely and also train.

The main protagonist of this novel is Percy Jackson. Percy Jackson is a twelve-year-old demigod, who is the son of the God of water, Poseidon. Percy Jackson has black hair, and sea green eyes, resembling his father, Poseidon. Most demigods in the series, including Percy, have ADHD and dyslexia. Dyslexia allows the demigods to read Ancient Greek, and the ADHD is really their battle reflexes.

Grover Underwood is Percy’s best friend, and he is also a satyr, which means he is half human, half goat, but he is not a demigod. Annabeth Chase is a demigod, and she is the daughter of Athena, who is the goddess of wisdom, craft, and war. Annabeth and Percy met at Camp Half-Blood, and Grover and Percy have been friends for a while before the story began.

The novel starts with Percy Jackson in his school, and he is attacked by his math teacher, otherwise known as a scary monster. Percy soon finds out he is a demigod, and he gets an explanation as to why his life has been so terribly weird. Percy is given a pen that transforms into a sword by his history teacher, who turns out to be half horse.

When the lord of the Greek Gods’, Zeus’, lightning bolt is stolen, Percy is blamed for this enormous theft. Zeus warns Percy’s father, Poseidon, that if the lighting bolt that has been stolen is not returned to its rightful owner within two weeks (before the Summer Solstice), all out war will be waged between all of the gods, and Percy will suffer because of it.

With his friends Annabeth and Grover, Percy races against time to find the bolt and, in essence, save the world from the gods’ war. Luckily, Percy and his friends find the lightning bolt, despite the enormous obstacles they had to surpass to get to it and return peace to the gods and the world. They soon learn that another danger is not too far away, as the Titan Lord, Kronos, is rising up from the dead, soon to destroy the world.

Personally, I would say that this book and the series that it is a part of is one of the best books for young teens to read. You would never get bored reading this novel. There is comedy in the right parts and the novel is serious in the right parts. The characters are all interesting and people you could like (if you’re supposed to). The story is interesting because when you hear of Greek Gods, the story is from way long ago, and what makes this interesting is that this is a modern adaptation of a continuity where the Greek Gods are real and have control over the world and what happens to the world.

I recommend Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief to any young teen from ages 12-15 because you can relate to some of the characters problems. If you like action, then this novel is perfect for you because it has a lot of it, from Percy fighting Medusa, to fighting someone he thought was his friend. This novel was amazing and if I could rate it, I would give it a 10/10.
