The Always War by Margaret Peterson Haddix
The novel The Always War is about war, conflict, heroism and a little bit of drama. The book begins with an average teenage girl named Tessa who is at a town ceremony for a local war hero named Gideon, who is receiving the Nation's highest military award, The Medal Of Honor. During the ceremony Gideon refuses to accept the award. He says he didn't earn it and that he's a coward. He then runs off. Tessa is suspicious about why Gideon didn't accept the award and wanted to find the truth. Tessa follows him until she ends up on a plane with Gideon as the pilot and a copilot named Dek. They fly to the largest city in the enemy territory. During their flight they face squadrons of enemy fighter planes shooting at them and Gideon tells stories of what he did in the war. They end up making an emergency landing in Shargo, a military base in the enemy territory. There they refuel the plane and fly back to friendly territory. Most of story takes place during their flight to Shargo and back to the friendly territory. During the flight Tessa ends up finding the truth Gideon has been hiding. The truth is that the war started seventy five years earlier. The people of the town didn't know that the war was going on for so long;
they thought that it was only going on for a few years.
I chose this book because I was looking for some action and a good twist. I also chose this book because it was about war and military which interest me. The story got intense as each chapter progressed and I wanted to know what happened next. I liked how Tessa went all the way to find out the truth of why Gideon didn't want to accept the medal. I also like how the characters are determined to find the truth. The author described the characters and the action so well you could picture their facial expressions and the battle scenes. The plot and climax of the story was also well planned. The plot of the story was really good because it goes from scene to scene which affects the climax of the story. The story becomes more exciting and thrilling as you read each chapter and picture the climax. I think this is a great book to read and I highly recommend it if you are into action, war and mysteries.
