File this one under "Things that make you go 'Hmm'". Orwell's 1984 describes a chilling almost-reality in which free thought is nearly abolished, war is a constant, and the very minds of the members of society are being controlled by the government. Written clearly as a warning to future generations, this book demonstrates what happens when the government goes power-crazy and the people become mindless beings without any sense of free will.
