The New York Subway system, one of the oldest and largest in the world, is a rapid way of transport that brings together the New York city boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Bronx, that is owned by the New York government with 36 lines and more than 470 stations that around 2.4 million people use daily.
The subway fare being $2.75, which users can pay in various payment methods, makes it very convenient since it isn’t expensive and provides a great way to take you from point A to B anywhere in New York in a quick and cheap way.
Some of the lines are definitely preferred more by the NY subway system users, like the L train who usually takes first place when asking users which line, they find the best it covers a popular route, and because it has modern amenities such as Wi-Fi and charging ports, followed by the G and Q trains. Most people appreciate the routes these trains take more than others but also find these train lines a bit safer and cleaner than the rest, as well as finding them more reliable, since they’re almost always on time.
Even though the NYC subway system is a very accessible form of transportation that many New Yorkers choose to take as it’s quick and easy, they aren’t that satisfied with the service it provides, busses certainly beat the subway system when it comes to discussing the rider satisfaction since people find them more comfortable, they have fewer delays and better customer service but yet busses are only used by around 1.2 million people daily whereas the subway is used by double that amount of people.
A problem many people have with the NYC subway system that prevents them from being more satisfied with it is the safety of it, many New Yorkers are often uncomfortable with riding the subway since they find it unsafe because of reported robberies, stabbings and people throwing others in front of the trains but these are not usual daily happenings, on the contrary its relatively safe to ride it, while taking precautions to not stand too close to the platform edge as it can get quite crowded in the station, not keeping valued items in your back pocket and not involving yourself in arguments with the people there, then it’s safe to say nothing bad will happen to you.
Another problem people have with the subway in New York City is the amount of homeless people living in it. NYC has reportedly more than 350 people living in the stations and tunnels which might contribute to making commuters feel unsafe while riding. This stems from the fact that the homeless may engage in activities such as harassment and begging, they might also give the feeling of uncleanliness in the subway system since homeless people often contribute to litter and waste that impact the sanitation of the subway system. Regardless, there are attempts being made to lower the number of homeless people living in the subway system as much as possible and find housing for them.
Overall, the New York City Subway System, regardless of all its flaws, such as the safety concerns, aging infrastructure and equipment, homeless population in stations, the uncleanliness and pollution etc., remains an essential part of the city’s transportation network, even though definitely with areas in need of improvement, the service it provides from countless New Yorkers is necessary.
